Ski Arlberg in Austria has announced the opening of a new lift that will link Zürs and Stuben and create the largest ski area in Austria.

The Flexenbahn gondola is effectively a replacement bus service — as no new pistes are to be created. It is one of four new lifts that will be built in Ski Alberg over the summer, to the tune of €45 million. When it reopens for the 2016/17 season, the ski area will total 305km and 87 lifts, fully linking St Anton, St Christoph, Stuben, Zürs, Lech, Schröcken and Warth.

The new lifts are still subject to full planning permission, but will comprise new two-stage gondola at Zürs to replace the Trittkopf cable car. From the mid station, the new 10-person, 1.8km Flexenbahn gondola will provide the long-awaited connection from Zürs to Alpe Rauz at Stuben (and the start of the St Anton/St Christoph lifts via the Valfagehrbahn) and from Alpe Rauz, a new gondola will go up to the top of Stuben.

The Flexenbahn will also allow for the introduction of a new 65km “Run of Fame”, from Warth to Rendl, with 18,000m vertical and a good day trip.
