Ski Rossendale plans to become "a winter sports centre of excellence"

One of the biggest ski centres in the north west of England has applied for a grant of £500,000 to become a “winter sports centre of excellence”.

Ski Rossendale in Rawtenstall, in Lancashire’s picturesque Rossendale Valley, currently has a 200m main slope, fun park and nursery slope as well as a quarter-pipe, all serviced by two rope tows and a travelator for children. It offers tubing and race camps as well ask skiing and snowboarding.

The centre has applied for the half-million pound grand from Sports England to improve facilities. The plans include building a new main ski hire building, new changing areas, lockers, toilets and showers, with full disabled access to a new café on the first floor.

After a chequered few years, Ski Rossendale reopened in 2011 as a social enterprise run by local ski and snowboard enthusiasts. With popularity for winter sports growing in England, the time is ripe to extend and the centre wants to redevelop the nursery slope for beginner skiers and snowboarders, installing a new surface and enlarging the area.

“This redevelopment is designed to give all our customers an excellent experience both on and off the slopes, to create a place where people can come and enjoy the sports or just spend some leisure time enjoying this unique alpine atmosphere,” David Fuller, operations director of Ski Rossendale, told The Lancashire Telegraph.

Ski Rossendale is currently open seven days a week, from 1pm to 10pm weekdays and 9am to 5pm on weekends. For more information visit skirossendale.co.uk
