Police in France have opened an investigation following the death of a man in the ski resort of Flaine.

The 43-year-old skier was on the Serpentine piste, a blue run, at 4pm on Sunday afternoon when the man hit another skier. According to reports in French newspapers, both skiers were given treatment on the slope by two doctors who witnessed the crash, before mountain rescue and French mountain police arrived.

The skier who was hit survived the crash, but sustained “unknown” injuries, the 43-year-old died as a result of his injuries.

It is the latest in a series of accidental deaths in the Alps. Last week a French ski instructor and his client fell 100m down a cliff when a cornice collapsed beneath them between Avoriaz and Les Crosets; in February a British women died after losing control on a blue piste in La Plagne and the same day a teenager died in a crash after sledding down a piste in Les Deux Alpes on a mattress normally used as a safety barrier.

There have also been multiple deaths from avalanches this season.
