As the ski season draws to a close in the Northern Hemisphere, resorts in Australia are reporting the first snowfalls of the year.

Although the start of the ski season in Perisher and Thredbo is still five weeks ago, both resorts have reported a light dusting of between two and five centimetres of snow over the weekend.

The snow, brought by an unusually cold front for the time of year, fell in high areas of the Snowy Mountains and Central Tablelands. Bigger dumps of snow are generally expected at the end of this month and early June.

This year Perisher will open a new $4million chairlift at Guthega at the start of its season and last year announced plans to build a “superpipe”, a 22-foot half-pipe in the Central Valley.

“Construction of the new chairlift is on schedule and it looked perfectly at home with a blanket of white on it this weekend,” said Perisher chief executive officer Peter Brulisauer.

“With Perisher scheduled to open on the June long weekend, we will take advantage of this early cold snap and start snowmaking this week.”
