Snow falls for Austria and Switzerland

Somewhat of a transformation for a good few resorts on Wednesday 13 April, with a sudden switch from high temperatures and sunny skies to much cooler conditions and showers – first as rain, then turning to snow.

Austria was a notable beneficiary, with (according to Skiing Austria) snow to 700m around Innsbruck. And Inghams revealed some good pics of St Anton and Lech (15-35cm new snow) – where only two days ago, a WTSS reader was hugely disappointed at the conditions and severe thaw. The snow at village level is still likely to melt fast, but with temperatures much colder on the mountain for a couple of days, conditions should be much improved and the snow holding up better in the high resorts.

Over in Obergurgl – a reliable late season resort – it was minus 11 degrees on the mountain, keeping the slopes firmer than of late.

Snow has also been falling in Switzerland too, where Engelberg received 30cm on Wednesday. And the temperature change must have been a shock, plummeting to minus 17 degrees on the high Titlis slopes. There is no snow at valley level now, but Titlis has got good cover for a late season break (open into May) – and has had a reliable, decent season compared with other parts of the Alps.

Engelberg, Switzerland, 14 April – plenty of good skiing on Titlis after 30cm fresh.

And here’s the tracks to prove it …
