Snow is falling in the Alps - but where?

Snow has been falling in the Alps — with a storm hitting very localised areas.

According to our snow guru Fraser Wilkin of weathertoski.co.uk (who produces our weekly snow reports) the heaviest snow has falling in the Italian Piedmont in the south west of the Alps (eg Bardonecchia, Sestriere, Alagna),, parts of the Aosta Valley (Pila) and some of the far south-eastern French Alps (eg Isola 2000).

It’s still snowing in these areas today — some places are likely to receive as much as a metre of new snow just in time for Christmas. And if you’re heading to the US, you’re in for a treat. Yesterday we had an email from Aspen in Colorado celebrating an overnight dump of 21 inches — argh!!

There has been a dusting of snow in other areas, including Verbier in Switzerland and Kitzbühel in Austria, — where this photograph was taken yesterday.

We will be running our last pre-Christmas snow report on Thursday 22 December, which will hopefully have good news for skiers heading to the north-western Alps. Ski resorts such as Morzine, Megève and Villars remain much in need of the white stuff. Let’s hope Father Christmas brings a little winter with him next weekend!
