Despite the unseasonal temperatures, winter is coming to London this week — with 10 tonnes of real snow being dumped in Covent Garden to give budding skiers and snowboarders a chance to learn some new skills.

“London Snow” is part of the Slide2Sochi Roadshow, intended to get more Brits to start skiing and snowboarding, and to garner more support for the British team before the Sochi 2014 Olympics.

The Snow Centre at Hemel Hempstead is supplying real snow for a 5m x 10m outdoor slope, on which 15-minute try-out sessions will be offered to the public, with tuition from fully qualified instructors.

The slope will be opened by British halfpipe snowboarder and Sochi 2014 hopeful Dom Harington on Thursday, 24 October, and the slope will remain open until Sunday, 27 October. It is open 11am to 7pm on Thursday, 11am to 6pm on Friday, 10.30am to 6pm on Saturday and 12 noon to 5pm on Sunday.

Everyone who has a go at London Snow will be given a goody bag courtesy of Snow+Rock.

Ian Brown, managing director of The Snow Centre, Hemel Hempstead comments: “It’s a great opportunity for people to get a little taste of skiing and introduce them to snowsports. I hope people will get hooked and visit us to train those ski legs in preparation for a winter holiday!”
