Are you a snowboarder who wants to learn how to go touring? Tour operator Action Outdoors, the UK arm of French association UCPA, has launched dedicated splitboarding courses this winter in the ski resorts of Val d’Isère and Argentiere.

The splitboarding courses will run all winter for confident, experienced snowboarders who already spend a lot of time off-piste but want to learn how to tour in access not served by lifts.

There are both day tours available and a full hut-to-hut tour using some of the mountain refuges in the Chamonix Valley; though the latter is aimed at expert off-piste snowboarders with previous splitboarding experience. They’re reasonably priced, as you’d expect from a UCPA course, with prices starting at £898 per person, including full-board accommodation, lift passes, equipment hire and 23 hours of instruction or guiding. Equipment is also provided, including splitboard, boots, transceiver, shovel and probe — which makes this an excellent option for snowboarders wanting to try splitboarding without the need for shelling out on equipment straight up. For the more advanced courses, harnesses and climbing gear will also be provided.

David Robertson, managing drector of Action Outdoors, said: “Riding off-piste comes with some real dangers and that’s why it’s vital to explore new or unfamiliar areas with a qualified guide. These splitboarding courses are for expert level off-piste snowboarders who want to be challenged, venture past the piste markers and improve their self-reliance in the mountains with the help of qualified mountain guides. As well as refreshing avalanche safety and offering helpful tips for improving snowboarders’ technique, the guide’s local knowledge comes with the advantage of knowing where to find the best conditions and descents.”
