The US ski resort of Squaw Valley is the second in California to extend its season until 4 July, following record-breaking snow fall.

More than 16 metres (53ft) of snow has fallen during powerful storm systems that have been cycling through California’s Sierra, hitting North Tahoe resorts heavily. At the end of January, Mammoth Mountain announced it was to stay open until 4 July.

While Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows will stay open until 4 July, Northstar California and Sugar Bowl will remain open until 23 April and Mt rose Ski Tahoe until 7 May.

“We are 91 days into our season, and we’re expecting to operate on July 4 and so that means we’re not even halfway done with the season,” said Sam Kieckhefer, a spokesperson for Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows.

Last week, seven snow cats had to dig out the bottom station of Squaw’s Siberia chair lift. Watch the video below!
