The mayor of French ski town Saint-Martin-de-Belleville has appealed to locals not to hit the slopes over New Year.

With less than half of the Three Valleys ski area open, André Plaisance asked residents of St Martin to leave the slopes free for tourists, The Daily Telegraph reports today.

“We have lots of customers who come from far away and we want to make their satisfaction a priority,” said Plaisance.

Current snow conditions in the Alps are very bad for late December, but in North America skiers are continuing to have a ball with day after day of powder as the forecast El Niño dumps on Colorado, Wyoming, California and Canada.

But there is some cheerier news in sight for the Alps, according to Fraser Wilkin of Weather to Ski, who forecasts weather fronts to move in at the middle to end of next week with possible snow and much-needed colder temperatures.

“While it remains tricky to pin down the timing and detail, the first week in January does look very interesting in terms of snowfall potential, with the southern and western Alps most in the firing line, as things stand,” said Fraser.
