Super-G success for Vonn

Lindsey Vonn of the United States won the women’s World Cup super-G race in Bulgaria on Sunday, her 10th victory of the season so far and a record-breaking 18th career World Cup super G win – passing Austria’s Renate Goetschl in the record books.
The women’s World Cup racing has been taking place in Bansko, but with Saturday’s downhill race cancelled at the last minute due to high winds, all attention was focused on the super-G event.
Despite two big errors, the overall World Cup leader and Olympic downhill champion Vonn recovered sufficiently to take first place. The American almost fell on the upper part of the course and made another costly error halfway down. At the intermediate time check she was 0.6 seconds behind Liechtenstein’s Tina Weirather.
But Vonn powered through on the steepest and most difficult part of the race course (the Tomba section) to beat Weirather with a finishing time of 1:15:66. Italy’s Daniela Merighetti was third, 0.07 seconds back.
Vonn, who also won the super-G race in Bansko three years ago, commented on a ‘difficult and challenging’ course, that can be bumpy and icy throughout. But Sunday’s win stretched her advantage in the super-G standings to 94 points. Thanks to the victory, the 27-year-old also looks set to claim another crystal globe, which would be her third. But there is still the World Cup finals to come.
Vonn leads in the overall standings too, 528 points ahead of Slovenia’s Tina Maze.
The finals will take place in Schladming, Austria.
