The first week of May and, as our quick webcam shot shows, winter has returned to the Alps this week – notably to Switzerland.

Heavy snow has been falling all day in Zermatt, where the above picture shows Findeln in several centimetres of fresh powder. Higher up on the Klein Matterhorn glacier, the temperatures plummeted to minus 12; it is a bit chilly and foggy up there right now, but there should be some excellent glacier skiing when the clouds clear.

And over in Saas Fee they are reporting 20cm new snow overnight. No lifts were operating on Wednesday though, given the poor weather. It has been snowing heavily in Engelberg too, open until 24 May if you fancy some late spring turns.

The cold snap is expected to last a bit longer too, with further snow showers and sub-zero temperatures until the weekend.
