Grooming on Gemsstock: Andermatt is breaking records opening this weekend

The storm that blew in across Europe this week has meant that non-glacial ski resorts across the Alps and Pyrenees are getting ready to open early — with Andermatt and Verbier opening this weekend.

Andermatt is breaking records by starting tomorrow, with almost 1.5m of powder on the Gemsstock.

Mountain rescue chief Carlo Danioth said “There’s never before been as much snow on the Gurschen / Gemsstock at this time of year as today.”

Currently, the Snow is on the Gurschenalp at around 140cm, on Cuolm Val in Sedrun at around 130cm and 270cm in the Gemsstock. The Gurschen cable car and Gurschengrätli chairlift will be open, along with three pistes — Gurschenalp, Mändli and Lara Gut — for a day ticket of CHF40 for adults, CHF30 for children.

Verbier will be opening three weeks early — the gondola to Ruinettes and Funispace to Attelas will be cranking in to life, along with the chairlift out from Lac des Vaux. Both resorts will continue to open weekends until December.

Other resorts will be opening later this month, including Val Thorens — where WTSS will be skiing for the inaugural weekend on 21 November. Blogs to follow!
