British skiers could burn 9,743,040,000 calories on the slopes this winter, according to recent research by Chill Factore. The UK’s longest indoor real snow slope is encouraging people to hit the ski slopes to lose weight and get fitter the fun way.

In a report released earlier this week, Chill Factore found that 80 per cent of people don’t think of skiing or snowboarding as exercise — just good fun. In fact, an hour of downhill skiing at “moderate effort” burns around 408 calories, says Chill Factore — more than an hour of aerobics (374 calories), doubles tennis (340 calories) or badminton (348 calories).

Chill Factore calculated the calorie burn of 9,743,040,000 based on the number of Brits skiing each year (1.2million) — who could, if they don’t spend their holiday eating cheese and drinking beer, lose a combined weight of 200,000 stone.

To encourage people to get skiing, Chill Factore has launched the “Guaranteed to Ski / Snowboard” campaign running between now and 28 February. Beginners at Chill Factore can learn to ski/snowboard on the 180m slope in just one day for £150 — and if they’re not deemed “slope ready” after their six hours of tuition, Chill Factore instructors will provide an extra hour of tuition free.

Morwenna Angove, CEO of Chill Factore, explains; “It is no surprise that so many skiers and snowboarders see the sport as fun rather than exercise – what’s better than the exhilaration of speeding down the slopes on fresh white powder with clear blue skies and breath-taking views. But as the New Year fitness frenzy is flooding the nation with thousands of people slogging away on the treadmill, we are encouraging as many people as possible to consider the health benefits of taking up snow sports. After all, losing weight and getting fit doesn’t have to be boring!

“Typically the nation ditches their fitness resolutions on 17 January – if you are thinking of doing so, why don’t you swap it for a fitness regime that you won’t tire of and consider hitting the slopes, at home or abroad, and shedding pounds while having fun!”
