Learn to Ski and Snowboard Month takes place in the US this month, with ski resorts across 22 states in North America are offering special packages to beginners throughout January, to encourage more people to take up skiing and snowboarding.

Learn to Ski and Snowboard month encourages children and adults to learn by taking lessons from professional instructors, and also challenges current skiers and snowboarders to improve their skills through lessons.

This year, in conjunction with Learn to Ski and Snowboard Month, any current skiers and boarders who help newcomers sign up for lesson between January and mid March stand to win one of a host of brilliant prizes. Thousands of pounds in cash is on offer under the Bring A Friend initiative, plus products from the likes of Rossignol, Burton and The North Face or even a trip to the three US Winter Olympic venues — Salt Lake City, Whiteface/Lake Placid and Squaw Valley as well as packages to the Topnotch Resort in Stowe, Hoo Doo and Mt Bachelor.

Learn to Ski and Snowboard Month has been run since 2009 by the US ski and snowboard industry national, regional and state associations, the industry trade media, retailers and retail organisations.

In its first year, January 2009, 20,000 children and adults took lessons in a handful of resorts but now more than 300 resorts in 33 states offer special learning programs during January. More than 153,000 took lessons last January. Some states also offer learning programs for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.
