Vail, Colorado is going beyond the traditional cafeteria-style mountain dining options next winter, with a new restaurant – announced as called ‘The 10th’.

The new hut is due to open on 1 December, built in the Mid-Vail part of the ski area. It’s all set to be a quality table-service experience, with a contemporary atmosphere and a genuine relaxed feel about the place (aka slippers n’ what not).

The name ‘The 10th’ apparently refers to the veterans of the 10th Mountain Division, many of whom were involved in the ski industry following World War II; they influenced the development of Vail’s ski area and included some of Vail’s founders.

The new restaurant will seat about 160 people in the main area and 40 in a lounge. There will also be a sun-deck seating another 40 people. Part of the location appeal will be in the views across to the Gore Range of mountains, and the Look Ma and Challenge ski trails.

Menus have not been finalised yet, as the new chef will be putting together a gourmet-style cuisine. But the building style is wood and stone, including green onyx. And unlike many US huts of this style, it won’t be a private club.

The whole project has been managed by the company that built the original Two Elk restaurant. Reservations will be open to all, with some seating allocated to Vail Mountain Club members.

Work began in August 2010 to build The 10th, and is so far completion is on schedule for the new season grand opening. We look forward to our next visit to Vail then …

The 10th forms part of a huge investment by Vail Resorts for next winter, with the recently acquired Northstar-at-Tahoe ski area in California also benefitting from extensive redevelopment: a new chairlift and glades that are due to add an extra 10% to the resort’s skiable terrain; plus a new mountain restaurant and increased snowmaking. Vail itself also plans to improve children’s facilities, with new Kids’ Adventure Zones.
