Ambitious plans have been announced for the linking of Park City and Canyons Resort in Utah which, if they go ahead, will create the largest linked ski area in the US, with more than 7,300 acres of skiable terrain.

Vail Resorts has owned the lease on Canyons Resort since May 2013, and bought Park City Mountain Resort last September. Today the company announced formal plans to inject more than US$50 million of improvements before next season, including an interconnecting gondola between the two ski resorts. But the project has not yet received planning permission by Summit County or the City of Park City — so there is a long way yet to go.

From the 2015-2016 ski season, the two resorts will be unified as “Park City Mountain Resort”, with the Canyons base area renamed “Canyons at Park City”.

The planned two-way, eight-passenger “Interconnect Gondola” will run from the base of the existing Silverlode Lift at Park City to the Flatiron Lift at Canyons. The gondola will also have an unloading station at the top of Pine Cone Ridge giving access to Thaynes Canyons at Park City or to the Iron Mountain area at Canyons through new trails that will be created from Pine Cone Ridge.

In Park City, Vail Resorts plans to upgrade the King Con quad to a fast six-person chairlift as well as the Motherlode Lift from a fixed-grip triple to a fast quad chairlift. A new restaurant is planned for the base of the Silverlode, with 500 indoor seats, and an additional 250 seats at the Red Pine Restaurant in Canyons.

Additional snow cannons will be sited on the Iron Mountain area of Canyons, and US$5 million will be spent on “catch up” maintenance and upgrades at Park City, rectifying the lack of spending at the resort over the past few years.

“This comprehensive capital plan for Park City and Canyons is one of the most ambitious and impactful plans undertaken at any resort in industry history, transforming the experience at both resorts and creating the largest single ski resort in the US,” said Blaise Carrig, president of the mountain division for Vail Resorts.

He added, “The plan was based on feedback from guests and the local community as well as discussions with the senior operating teams at the two resorts. We look forward to continuing to work with the county and the city and are hopeful we can bring this plan to life for the 2015-16 ski season.”
