Verbier is running two excellent-value mountaineering ski camps in the run up to the Patrouilles des Glacier (PdG) race.

The camps being run by Téléverbier and Les Guides de Verbier, with the first this weekend (17-18 February) and the second on 10-11 March. The two days will cover ski technique, rope-work, night skiing and analysis of avalanche risk, as well as a practical avalanche session and other skills — depending on weather conditions.

Skiers will stay overnight in La Maison de Vacances Les Ruinettes, which has bunkbed-style rooms for five, eight and four people. In all, each camp has room for 60 participants with ten guides teaching each day.

The camp costs CHF382 (about £295) for the weekend, including accommodation, meals, a two-day Verbier lift pass and mountain guides. Ski and touring equipment is not included.

The PdG, an overnight race from Zermatt to Verbier, renowned as being one of the toughest in the world, starts on 17 April. There are also preparation camps in Grindelwald and Zermatt. While the camps are aimed primarily at ski racers, they are open to the public and valuable to all.
