Verbier is opening to skiers and snowboarders this weekend as a one-off thanks to the good layer of snow at the top of Mont Fort.

The cold, prolonged spring and excellent snow conditions means there is plenty of snow for skiing on the Tortin Glacier from Mont Fort (3,300m) to Gentianes (2,900m). It will open from 10am to 1pm tomorrow (13 July) and Sunday (14 July).

Access to the glacier will be from Verbier and Le Chable (from 8am) and Siviez (Nendaz) and the lift pass will cost CHF20 for the day.  Barbecue grills will be set up at Igloo Mont Fort and Gentianes, though La Chaux and Tortin restaurants .

“It’s just amazing, you can either bike or hike everywhere or go skiing…then ending with a massive barbecue!” said Isabelle Hefti from the Verbier tourist office.

The Tortin glacier used to be open to summer skiers, but closed during the 1980s due to warmer weather and a shrinking glacier, coupled with a lack of demand.
Verbier tried to reopen to skiers and snowboarders in early June but the resort’s attempts were foiled by bad weather.
