A metre of snowfall this week and more to come means that Whistler can’t wait any longer. The resort will open on Saturday 14 November – 12 days earlier than planned.

It is too early to say whether this week’s bumper snowfall will ‘maketh’ another great winter and fabulous Olympics, but skiers and riders will be able to hit the fresh powder at the weekend. Whistler will open the Village gondola, Big Red Express, Emerald Express and Franz’s chair for business from Saturday; Blackcomb is due to open two weeks later on 26 November.

The Canadian resort has received between 70cm and 100cm of snow in just a week, with another possible 65cm forecast by opening day. Combine that with their 160 snow-guns and there should be some decent snow on offer to get the season moving.

The resort has also announced that the new Aava Whistler hotel will open its doors on 26 November. The hotel is located in Whistler Village, close to the resort amenities. It comes complete with leisure facilities, new White Spot restaurant and all the amenities you’d expect of a top-class stay. There are ‘Grand Opening’ weekday rates available from $99 Canadian per night for a Deluxe Room from 26 November up to to Christmas Eve, 24 December.
