The Italian ski resort of Cortina d’Ampezzo will start work in June on a new gondola that will for the first time link the ski areas of Tofane and Cinque Torri. The journey has previously only been possible by bus.

Cortina was due to hold the Alpine Ski World Finals in March, which were cancelled due to the coronavirus outbreak — with man preparations underway. But in February 2021 the resort will host the World Ski Championships, and the new gondola is the first piece of major infrastructure to be built ahead of that.

The gondola will link the Tofane slopes close to the town from Son dei Prade, with the runs of Cinque Torri at Bai de Dones, which in turn can provide access to the Sella Ronda ski domain. This journey is currently made by bus, so the new lift will reduce road traffic while simultaneously making the journey smoother and easier with each cabin seating ten skiers over a 4.5km journey.

The gondola will be built by Leitner Ropeways, who are aiming to complete the project by the end of this year or by early January 2021.
