Tickets go on sale today for the world’s first entirely human-powered ski resort that will open in Colorado this weekend.

On Saturday 15 February, Bluebird Backcountry will open Whiteley Peak — an hour’s drive north of Silverthorne — the world’s first ski resort without any form of motorised transport and the first resort to open in Colorado in 15 years.

Bluebird Backcountry describes itself as an “avalanche evaluated environment” and a “soulful respite from the crowds”. It offers easy-to-follow skinning tracks and downhill skiing for all level of backcountry skiers, from beginners to experts. There is 1,200 acres of terrain, a mix of slopes wooded with Aspen trees and wide open bowls. There are ski-touring rental shops, a warming hut, food outlet, lessons for first-time backcountry skiers as well as safety clinics — but the number of skiers allowed on the hill each day will be limited to just 300.

Whiteley Peak is opening for just one month this season, as a test period, from 15 February to 15 March. The idea was first mooted during the 2016-17 season and gathered pace quickly, a survey launched in 2018 went viral and the organisers were inundated with volunteers to get the concept off the ground.
