The 9km Zlatibor “Gold Gondola” is ready to open in Serbia once the coronavirus lockdown lifts

The longest gondola in the world will open in Serbia as soon as the country comes out of lockdown from the coronavirus pandemic.

The Zlatibor “Gold Gondola” lift is nearly 9,000m long (9km) and has been built to serve tourists — and skiers — connecting the centre of Zlatibor with the ski area of Tornik via a stopover station at Lake Ribničko. The journey will take around 25 minutes, and some 1,200 skiers will be transported per hour.

The gondola is the result of a five-year project to expand tourism in the Zlatibor region of western Serbia, and the new lift has been built with the help of French ski lift company Poma.

There are 7km of slopes in the Tornik ski area, served by five lifts.

Before the Zlatibor Gold Gondola was built, the title of “longest gondola lift in the world” was held by the Tianmen Shan cable car in Zhangjiajie National Park in China, where the film Avatar was made. The lift is 7.4km long.
