Alpbachtal-Wildschönau – Ski Juwel

Austria

Alpbach's quiet slopes

The upside

  • Charming, traditional, relaxed village, good for families
  • Good intermediate terrain, not without challenges

The downside

  • A lot of bus riding if you choose to stay in cute central Alpbach
  • Long easy runs for progression are few, and not easily reached

    Summary

Alpbach is an old British favourite – it even has a British ski club. The Wildschönau area (which gets its own web page) is best known in Britain for the tiny resort of Niederau (which also gets its own page), although its major resort in skiing terms is Auffach. A two-stage gondola is all it took in 2012 to link Alpbach and Auffach. Reith and Oberau, like Niederau, aren’t linked to the other resorts.
