Summary
Sierra Nevada is in the extreme south of Spain, near Granada. The resort is one of Europe’s sunniest, but enjoys reliable snowfall and high altitude slopes – views from the top look out to the Atlas mountains in Morocco. The hub of the resort is Pradollano, a stylish purpose-built development with shops, restaurants and bars set around traffic-free open spaces. Most of the accommodation is in older, less smart buildings set along a road winding up the steep hillside. Two main lifts, including an eight-person gondola, go up from the base to the mid-station at Borreguiles. The slopes straddle three sides of the mountain and offer well-linked but limited beginner and intermediate terrain. There are excellent nursery slopes too. Most runs are north-west facing and above 2000m so when the wind blows, as it does, the slopes close; there are no trees. The resort’s southerly location and proximity to the Spanish coast makes it possible to combine a winter holiday with a few days beside the sea.
