Summary
We dropped Steamboat from our guidebook a few years back, along with several other resorts that lacked support from readers. It reappeared in the final 2016 edition because we visited in February 2015, and liked both the hill and the nearby town of Steamboat Springs more than we expected to.
What we didn’t like, despite recent improvements, is the mountain base area, which has been developed piecemeal over many years. Some of its lodgings are convenient for the snow (some are emphatically not), but it is devoid of life after the immediate après session. Plans to redevelop the Ski Time Square area to the left of the lift base give some hope. Meanwhile, the increasingly amusing town is only a shuttle ride away.
