Summary
Tuscany conjures up images of summer sun, rolling hills and vineyards, chianti, lovely old buildings and charming old cities and villages. Well yes, it has all that. But it also has some good skiing in the Apennine mountains. The main resort in the Apennines is Abetone, less than two hours from Florence and Pisa. If you want to get away from Alpine crowds and touristy resorts and visit a real locals’ mountain, consider Abetone; it is a good place for a short break because it’s easy to get to; it’s also easy to combine a stay here with visits to cities such as Florence, Pisa, Siena and Lucca.
