Summary
Cauterets is a charming, old spa town at the head of a wide, sunny valley. Many of the central buildings are well-preserved examples of 19th century France, with the grand spas the main attraction. The resort is also a popular base for the impressive cross-country trails at nearby Pont d’Espagne. The downhill skiing is somewhat more limited and takes place in a high, open and treeless bowl a long gondola ride up from the resort. Lifts radiate around the bowl, serving mainly red and blue runs. There is a good nursery area by the top station, so is a popular weekend destination for local families.
