Summary

Innsbruck is not a ski resort in the usual sense. It is a historic university city of around 140,000 inhabitants, with a vibrant cultural life, and is a major tourist destination in summer. The city has twice hosted the Olympic Winter Games, as well as the 2012 Winter Youth Olympics. It is surrounded by several ski areas that share a lift pass and are accessible by efficient bus services. Among them are a glacier that is one of the best in the world, the Stubaier Gletscher (see Stubai valley entry) and one of Austria’s highest, most snow-sure non-glacier areas, Kühtai (2020m).
