Summary
Kranjska Gora is Slovenia’s best-known resort, close to the Italian and Austrian borders and surrounded by the beautiful mountain scenery of the Julian Alps. The World Cup slalom races are held here regularly, on the steep Padokoren black run. The village has a small old centre, with enough shops and restaurants to suit most visitors. It is a fairly lively place too, though most of the action centres around the main hotels – many of which are at the base of the slopes, so make a good choice for families. Standards of accommodation have improved considerably in recent years, and you’ll find the wellness and leisure facilities comparable to many Alpine resorts. The slopes spread along one side of the Vitranc mountain; most are short and lack variety. And the low altitude can mean poor snow at resort level too – extensive snowmaking now helps. But the wide, treelined runs make a good place to learn.
