Review of Steamboat

4th February 2008 by Andy Hunt

I have just (Feb 08) returned from 10 days in Steamboat, which I enjoy very much. One downside is the lack of restaurants/huts on the Pony express Storm Peak side of the mountain ie none except for the very small four points hut. The news is that this maybe rectified this summer with further improvements to the lift system. The main news is that the base area is to be redeveloped with the older accommodation around SKi Time Square being flattened this summer including the TugboatInn although that may be spared for another year.

Not part of my review but I believe this should be publicised as so few people know of this type of hazard and it has been the cause of most deaths over the years (more than avalanche related deaths in Steamboat). There were two deaths in Steamboat within 10 days in Jan from suffocation by falling in the Tree Wells formed by protecting branches of evergreen trees in deep snow; these occurred on the very popular Coffee Cowboy and Snooze Bar blue runs (relatively easy runs and used a lot by early intermediate skiers for that reason).
