Review of Gressoney-la-Trinité

Can’t believe Rhion (review 2009) went to the same resort! Yes you can find more extensive piste skiing for far more money in France or Switzerland but this is a terrific resort.
We’ve just returned from half term there for the second year running and the longest lift queue all week was 10 minutes (generally more like 0-2 minutes). I won’t be troubling St Anton, Val D’Isere or the 3 Valleys at half term ever again!
There are some great restaurants on the pistes. I particularly like the excellent Polenta dishes at the restaurant just above the Frachey chair. And if you want a splurge a must visit is the Stadel Soussun restaurant (stadelsoussun.com), accessed down a little track just below the Frachey chair where for not much more than the price of a bowl of overcooked spag bol & a glass of beer in Val you can have a really memorable Italian meal in fantastic surroundings. And they even return you to the piste on a snowcat!
As for the skiing? Well there’s a fast, modern efficient lift network and many of the pistes have excellent accessible off-piste alongside. For example there’s a long black run down to Alagna and you can ski parallel to it most of the way down. At the end of our second week there we were still discovering new places to ski (even though technically you could easily ski all the official pistes in a couple of days)
