Review of Flaine

31st January 2017 by carronbrae

We had a wonderful holiday again based in Les Carroz but updated our pass for one day to the Grand Massif which allowed us to go to Flaine. We were there in the second week of January just after a big fall of snow which meant conditions were excellent.

But our experiences at Flaine were not good ones. The run down by the Grand Vans lift is like a lemmings alley. The resort seemed to be filled with large groups of males that were trying to be macho and showing off to one another, skiing as fast as they could with scant regard for other skiers. There are some lovely blue runs down from the top of the gondola but these were spoiled for us by groups of guys racing to the bottom.

We also had a problem when the Grand Vans lift closed in the afternoon for a technical problem (believe it didn’t open again for 48 hours!). This is the main lift returning to Les Carroz. Instead we were directed to busses - what a scrum to get on with lots of pushing from the back by the macho males!

Later that day we learnt that there were 2 skiers killed in Flaine in 2016, in each instance the person that died had been innocently waiting at the side of blue runs in the correct places and had been run over by people out of control! The skiing was much better and quieter at Les Carroz, Samoens and Morrillon. I don’t think we’ll be hurrying back to Flaine.
