Review of Neustift

21st April 2011 by Col777

Stayed in Neustift in March 2011. Had sunshine ALL week.
Hotel was the usual Austrian standard, only gripe was charging €2 for water when we had our evening meals. Brochure (Crystal)talks about 3 ski area’s but the local Elfer ski is no more than a couple of intermediate runs. You could ski back down to the village but this was closed due to lack of snow. (Including tobogganing). The main ski area’s at the Stubai Glacier and Schlick2000 were a bus ride away. The bus timetable for the Glacier was regular and could get very busy from 9am onward. Tip ~ don’t get wrapped up and if possible sit on the RHS (out of the sun). It’s about 25 minutes to the Glacier and can get warm. Schlick2K is opposite direction and only 10 minutes. Bus journey was fine the two days we went.
Ski conditions at the Glacier were great, big variety of runs and wide open slopes. Queues were generally OK, never more than a minute or two. Only possible concern was on an afternoon with the hot days the snow could get quite choppy. Restaurants were efficient and a good choice of food. Main area for beginners was Gamsgarten this was wide open and had a 6man chairlift + buttons/Tbars.
Schlick2000 was a smaller but equally entertaining resort. For beginners there was a lovely long blue run down to the middle station. However this got slushy on an afternoon due to the March sun. For intermediates there are some great reds, only concern was the slow 2man chair or T-bar to access them.
Overall Neustift is a nice quiet village with good access to great Ski areas and within 30 minutes of Innsbruck airport.
