Review of Cervinia

7th January 2017 by DHFULTON

Just spent Xmas week with the family in Cervinia and had a great time ! The resort is not huge but is linked to Zermatt. Lift system is very efficient, although high winds did cause a few problems on Xmas Eve for some on a gondola (luckily not us) ! Piste grooming was v good , although no moguls really.

The pistes were largely uncrowded, no lift queues and it was easy to find a lunch spot on demand (Baita Cretaz very good indeed). Runs are largely easy blues and reds , so not a place for experts but really great for timid intermediates (2 of our children) who want to achieve a sense of travel. We skied down from Plateau Rosa to Valtourneche one day - great very long red run with nice place to eat almost at the bottom (Foyer des Guides).

We used the Ride-Em ski school for some half day private lessons for the 2 younger children - very good and at least they did respond to my email enquiries prior to booking, unlike the other 2 major schools .

Mountain restaurants are excellent as indeed are most of the places in town . Prices not quite as low as in the Sella Ronda but still much cheaper than most of France. Locals were very friendly, helpful and eager to please - again better than France ! We stayed at the newly refurbished Hotel Europa (via Crystal)which was fantastic. Great quiet location just off the top end of the main thoroughfare and only 150m to the Cretaz lifts.( Location of accommodation is worth paying attention to in Cervinia as some places are a bit of an arduous walk to the lifts.)This hotel has great staff (especially Luca the maitre’d !),nice public areas, good rooms, lovely food and a reasonable wellness area. All in all a great week !
