Review of Champoluc

5th March 2012 by Hugh P

Have just returned from a short (long weekend) trip to Champoluc and Monterosa Ski. No new snow for a month and unusually warm early spring freeze-thaw conditions meant that some of the slopes were suffering (but nearly all remained open and in reasonable condition) and the off-piste was limited, though a dusting of fresh snow on our last night freshened things up nicely for the following day. Lovely long slopes, virtually empty until the crowds arrived up from Milan and Turin at the weekend, and a real sense of travel between the three valleys, which goes some way to offset the slight repetitiveness of the limited number of pistes. The scenery is truly stunning and the mountain restaurants lovely and friendly. The atmosphere in Champoluc is quiet rather than lively, even when busy at the weekend. We stayed at the Hotel California, which is a 10 minute walk from the centre of town and the main lift. Our trip was organised through Ski2, who specialise in the area and I cannot praise the excellent service from Simon and his team enough.
