Review of Deer Valley

9th April 2017 by nrj53

Visited february 2016 and 2017. Snow very good both years, but a 3+ metre base this year.  Excellent grooming and maintenance with mainly powder on the surface.  I skied mainly blue runs which are moderately steep and generally appropriately rated, with some being quite narrow and steep at points.  None of the slopes were too busy, but there are a reasonable number of people mid-morning and mid-afternoon.  Multiple lifts end on both Bald mountain and Flagstaff mountain, making it quite busy, but with a number of choices for slopes at each site, none seemed too full. Lift lines were always short and I never waited more than a few minutes.  The day is quite short with lifts not starting until 9.00 am and closing by 4.00 pm at the latest.  Ticket price was $590 for 5 days and is best bought online since numbers are limited for each day, and ticket pickup at the resort is very easy.

I stayed at Montage in Empire Canyon (5*) in 2016.  Ski in and out.  Large, a little impersonal but very comfortable, excellent restaurants, particularly for breakfast.  Outstanding ski room service looking after skis, boots.  I messed up with my own skis and they lent me great racing-style skis for free for the stay.  This year I stayed at the Stein-Erikson Lodge (5*).  Ski in and out.  Very much a wooden lodge atmosphere with good service, comfortable rooms, a single good restaurant, and an acceptable ski room.  Free shuttle into Park City.  Perhaps existing a bit more on its reputation than its claim to service and luxury.

Excellent River Horse restaurant on Main.  Busy but very good food.  About $100/person with wine.

Park City Transportation very good for airport shuttle, either shared or private.  About 45 minutes to Deer Valley
