Review of Serre-Chevalier

12th February 2015 by parisma

Went Jan 2015.
Snow in not bad condition, but quite a few runs closed. Not enough snow had fallen before and week ahead of trip was a bit mild. Still some decent runs available. Sun comes out a lot here as further south than main French resorts.
A few good reds were closed as well as the top of some blacks, in particular Beouf down to Villeneuve. Also above Monetier the red’s down to town were closed. Good ski early in week when weather bad due to tree line runs. Black to Chantemerle more like a very steep red at end of run.
Lift pass was good value for money, but not sure now. Also links are very slow in places and would put 3 valleys to shame. Took an age to get back to Villeneuve as top lift above Monetier was slow and kept stopping.
Also cost of food a bit much compared to Austria. Difference is rather than chips, sausage with coke from hole in wall in Courchevel and then eat in a free covered area from bad weather, you can have the same food and eat in the restaurant. Also could only afford one meal between 2, in Austria might get 2 meals.
Overall a good week skiing, but when I came in Feb 2013 more snow was around and a lot more runs open. Not that cheap either and think if on a budget would go elsewhere now. Also get a feeling the French have closed some runs in preparation for half term hols. Due to lack of snow and mild weather.
Not a cheap place to stay if you want by the slopes. More good value for money compared to 3 Valleys, Paradaski or L’Espace Killy. Else cheaper in other countries, but would have a smaller ski area.
