Review of Monterosa Ski

Went to Monterosa for a week in mid-March and absolutely loved it. It has a really genuine feeling to it - with friendly locals, low prices for food and hire and a notable lack of a touristy and gimmicky ambience. The scenery is breathtaking and the sheer size of the area gives a huge variety of vistas from cosy woods to top of the world panoramas.

Stayed at Rascard Frantze on the slopes above Champoluc, which was delightful, with wonderful hosts, and very reasonably priced - easily the best place I’ve stayed in the Alps.

The skiing was superb for our intermediate level - with long, varied, fast, often empty reds and easy blacks throughout the resort.  During weekdays - especially if it is overcast, or early in the morning - the pistes are empty. Our favourite area was on the Stafal side of Gressoney - which was even less crowded than the rest of the resort and offered some really long ‘away from it all’ runs.

The lift system is generally excellent - modern lifts, not a single draglift, very few stoppages and small queues only on sunny weekend days.

The only drawbacks for us were the limited number of pistes meant we’d skied everything by the second day, so ended up skiing the same pistes multiple times during the week, and the lack of variety of mountain food. It was almost all Valdostanan cuisine - which is hearty and terrific value for money, but not great for non-meat eaters and those who want something light.

We would definitely go back, but either for just a weekend or if/when we can ski off-piste, as the area has huge possibilities for that.
