Review of Monterosa Ski

9th February 2011 by tweedyreadie

My wife and I travelled independently and drove from Turin. A very easy transfer (c.1.5 hours). We stayed at the Jolanda Sport Hotel in Gressoney-la-Trinite.

Our room was huge and extremely comfortable. The wellness centre was great providing a range of saunas, steam room and swimming pool at the end of a day’s skiing. We also both enjoyed a massage which worked wonders on tired muscles!

Food and wine are important to us when we travel and we rarely stay half board usually favouring the freedom to sample the best of the local eateries. At Jolanda we were on a half board tariff and the food was extremely good throughout our stay and the wine was exceptional. Both Anne Marie and her husband Donato are sommeliers and have a wonderful cellar to choose from. We relied upon their recommendations each night and were never disappointed. Particularly noteworthy were the Cabreo - Il Borgo & Bolgheri - Sondraia.

Having skied far and wide, I have never skied anywhere quite as convenient - ski hire was across the street from the hotel, ski lift 10 yards from the boot room door and skipass office a further 10 yards! Offpiste conditions were not perfect when we were in Monterosa and yet we enjoyed the skiing very much particularly how relatively empty the pistes were at a time when snow was scarce across the Alps (except Austria) and Monterosa had relatively good cover. A few more Italians at the weekend (and Wednesday?) but if your past skiing has been in popular larger resorts the Monterosa will prove to be an unspoilt uncrowded joy.

Food and prices up the mountain are both excellent. 2 coffees for 3 euros, pasta lunch for two with a drink and coffee c.35 euros

If you like great service in a comfortable well run family hotel with good food and great wine serving convenient and unspoilt skiing give it a go - you won’t be disappointed!
