Summary
Yet another return visit in 2015 confirmed once again that this is one of our absolute favourite destinations. The landscape is the thing: the spectacular Dolomite scenery is like something Disney might have conjured up for a movie. Well, the landscape and the mountain restaurants.
The Sella Ronda is an amazing circular network of lifts and pistes around the Gruppo del Sella – a mighty limestone massif. Sheer cliffs rise out of gentle pastureland, which is where you ski mostly. The skiing is relaxing; the excitement comes from the views. This is one of the few destinations where we pray for sun; snowfalls would interfere with our scenery-gazing without bringing any real benefit – off-piste is off the agenda, and the snowmaking normally ensures reliably good piste skiing.
The scale of the area is some compensation for the lack of challenge; the distances you cover on skis are huge – in overall dimensions, the network beats even the famed Trois Vallées in France. There are three main resorts, each with its own slopes branching off from the main circuit. Our favourite is Corvara, with a lovely area of easy slopes off the main Sella Ronda circuit. Consider also Selva and Arabba, which get their own web pages.
