Söll

Austria

Soll slopes

The upside

  • Part of the SkiWelt, one of Austria’s largest linked ski areas
  • Local slopes are north-facing, so they keep their snow relatively well
  • Lovely intermediate cruising runs
  • Pretty village with lively après-ski
  • Cheap, even by Austrian standards
  • Snowmaking is very extensive and well used; even so ...

The downside

  • Low altitude can mean poor snow
  • Long walk or inadequate bus service from the village to the lifts
  • Runs on upper slopes mostly short
  • Few challenges except Hohe Salve
  • Not ideal for beginners
  • The SkiWelt slopes can get crowded

    Summary

Söll has long been popular with British beginners and intermediates, attracting both youths and families looking for fun of different kinds. The resort is in fact far from ideal for beginners, but the SkiWelt can be a great area for intermediate cruising. Whether it is depends on the snow. If the weather is coming from Russia, this area can have the best snow in the Alps; but usually it isn’t, and the snow may suffer from afternoon thaws and night-time frost.
Many visitors are surprised by the small size of the village (in particular, there aren’t many shops) and the long trek out to the slopes. You may prefer to stay near the lifts and trek into the village in the evening. Or you may prefer, like us, to stay in one of the other SkiWelt resorts – Ellmau or Scheffau along the valley or Westendorf over the hill, which has quicker access to the Kitzbühel slopes.
