St Anton

The upside

  • Varied terrain for experts and adventurous intermediates
  • Now part of Austria’s biggest ski area
  • Heavy snowfalls, lots of snow-guns
  • Car-free village centre retains solid traditional charm

The downside

  • Some pistes dangerously crowded
  • Slopes can be tough for near-beginners and timid intermediates
  • Most tough runs are unpatrolled
  • Snow quality can suffer from sun
  • Resort sprawls, with long treks from some lodgings to key lifts and bars
  • Centre can be noisy at night

    News – 2019/20

The Schindlergrat chairlift to Schindlerspitze will be replaced by a 10-person gondola and there will be an additional stage to make access to the huge off-piste bowls below the Valluga more easily accessible.

    Summary

St Anton is one of the world’s best resorts for competent skiers and riders, particularly those with the energy to après-ski as hard as they ski. If you want to, you can party from 3pm to 3am. Good luck!
It is now part of Austria’s biggest lift-linked ski area. But the place doesn’t suit everyone. If you are thinking of trying an Austrian change from a major French resort, or of going up a gear from Kitzbühel or Söll, beware of the downside of St Anton’s local slopes: blues that get heavily mogulled, reds that might be black and runs that can be dangerously crowded. As we’ve been saying for years, the resort needs to create an alternative to the busy blue run down from its main mountain.
