St-GervaisFrance

The upside
- Pleasant town with access to two major ski areas
- Appreciably cheaper than Megève
- Extensive easy slopes, with a great sense of travel
- Scenic setting, with splendid views
The downside
- Most of the slopes are below 2000m, so there’s a risk of poor snow
- Lots of slow old lifts remain in both sectors
- Few challenging pistes, though there is good off-piste
- Not ideal for beginners
- Only one run back to resort level

Summary
St-Gervais is a handsome 19th-century spa town set in a narrow gorge, sharing Megève’s ski area and that of Les Houches in the Chamonix valley. It is an urban but pleasant place that makes a cheaper alternative to staying in Megève, and a good base for exploring nearby resorts. There are no easy runs at resort level, so it’s not a good choice for beginners. The risk of poor snow still makes us wary of low resorts like this. But it is true that a few inches is enough to give skiable cover on the grassy slopes, and when there’s fresh snow falling this is a great place to be.
