ValmorelFrance

The upside
- A sympathetically designed purpose-built, car-free resort
- Largely slope-side accommodation
- Extensive easy slopes linked to St-François-Longchamp
- Beginners and children particularly well catered for
The downside
- Few challenges on-piste
- Mostly low, so snow is a worry; and snowmaking is not comprehensive
- Still lots of slow lifts and drags
- Steep site, with outlying lodgings very separate from the resort core
- Few alternatives to self-catering

Summary
Built from scratch in the mid-1970s, Valmorel is unlike any of its contemporaries – its central development feels like a tiny mountain town. The resort has gone up in the world recently, in terms of accommodation; but the ski area, to be frank, is lagging some way behind – and it is never going to compete with its illustrious neighbours in the next-door Three Valleys.
