Villard-ReculasFrance

The upside
- A short hop from Alpe-d’Huez and its extensive slopes
- Tiny rustic village, blissfully free of ski resort glitz
- Good local slopes including worthwhile off-piste terrain
The downside
- Resort amenities about the most limited in the skiing universe
- Very little choice of lodgings
- Dead in the evening
- Local runs are at the tough end of their classifications
- Road round the mountain to Huez and Alpe-d’Huez is prone to closure

Summary
For big-time skiing without all the usual trappings, Villard-Reculas is simply unrivalled. When we visited in January a few years back the total population appeared to be about 80. But a fast chair ride is all it takes to get to the slopes above big, brassy Alpe-d’Huez
The tiny village is set on a sunny shelf at about the treeline. The old core is real backwater of old stone houses separated by narrow lanes. Ranged up the hillside above it are a modest number of private chalets. There are some apartments to rent, including some good ones owned by the community. These are available through the British-run agency La Source, which also runs a charming catered chalet in the heart of the village.
There is an adequate village shop which also serves food, and another little restaurant next door. And a ski shop.
