Sum-up
The weather has settled down across the northern Alps, but low pressure in the Med is still bringing some snow to the far south-west, especially Italy. These flurries should die out over the weekend with most places enjoying some sunshine. A weak cold front will bring more cloud to northern and eastern Austria on Sunday, but by early next week high pressure will again be in charge.
Austria
Friday and Saturday will be dry with plenty of sunshine and freezing levels close to 2000m. A weak cold front will send temperatures tumbling on Sunday but, apart from the odd flurry in the north-eastern Alps, most places will stay dry with the best of any brightness in the west and south.
France
On Friday, cloud and a few snow flurries (900m) will plague the southern border with Italy. Otherwise most regions will be dry with plenty of sunshine and freezing levels at 1500m or higher. Any remaining cloud in the south-east should dissipate on Saturday leaving all areas dry with sunny spells. It will feel a little milder at altitude. Similar weather is expected on Sunday.
Italy
Snow flurries (700m) will continue to affect the western border regions on Friday. Further east it will be brighter with lots of sunshine expected in the Dolomites, where it will feel milder. On Saturday, the last of the snow flurries in the west should die out, but it may remain rather cloudy. Further east, the sunshine will continue. A fine day is expected across all regions on Sunday though temperatures will drop significantly in the east later.
Switzerland
Friday and Saturday will be dry with sunny spells in all regions with mild afternoon temperatures. Sunday will see more cloud and a drop in temperature in the north-eastern Alps, but other regions will remain bright.
Outlook
The first half of next week looks relatively settled with plenty of sunshine across the Alps. There are signs that more disturbed weather may approach from the north thereafter, but there is still lots of uncertainty about this at present.
