While the sun shines in the Alps, some resorts in North America are enjoying a bumper start to March.

In Western Canada, some resorts have received more than two feet of snow in the past week — with Banff Lake Louise getting 79cm (31in)in the past seven days and Jasper recording 7cm (27in) over the past week. Marmot Basin has broken a two-decade record with 70 cm (27 inches) of fresh snow falling over a three-day period and 37 cm (15 inches) falling overnight on 2 March.

In Colorado, snow has been causing havoc on the roads, but Breckenridge has had over a foot of snow since 1 March, and woke to 23cm of fresh powder yesterday (Tuesday) morning. In Vail, nearly two feet (56cm) has fallen in the past week, and in Beaver Creek, 15cm fell yesterday, bringing the total to 40cm this week.

Down in California, the Tahoe resorts have had 5/6in of fresh snowfall in the past week, and in Wyoming, it’s due to snow today and tomorrow in Jackson Hole, after a ridge of high pressure brought sunnier, warm weather.
